The most recent federal data show that in the 2020-21 school year, at least 14.7 million students nationwide were chronically absent. This means that chronic absence has almost doubled from the more than 8 million students, pre-Covid-19, who were missing so many days of school that they were academically at risk. Chronic absence — missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused, unexcused absences, and suspensions—can translate into students having difficulty learning to read by the third grade, achieving in middle school, and graduating from high school.

Good Morning, Bus 140 for Winstead Elementary is running 30 minutes behind schedule this morning. Please plan accordingly. We apologize for the inconvenience that this situation has caused. Thank you for your patience and have a great day.

Good Evening Wahoo Family,
This is a reminder that tomorrow and Thursday are both early release days. Students will get out at 1 pm. Please make sure you are at your child’s bus stop 2 hours earlier than normal. Students are out for the Winter break starting on Friday. Students will return to school on Monday, January 8th.
Lastly, as some of you may have heard, it is bittersweet for me to announce that I will be transferring to Coopers Elementary starting January 1st as the Principal. For the past 2.5 years I have been blessed to call WAVE my family. Just as the feeling of embarking on a new life experience is exciting, leaving all of you is equally disheartening. I know that I am leaving behind a school filled with amazing students and staff as well as awesome parents and community members. I know for sure that you are in great hands with Mrs. Kelley, which makes the transition away from WAVE a little easier. Thank you all for making my time here at Winstead Avenue absolutely amazing! I will miss you all!
I hope everyone has a wonderful evening.

NC Law Senate Bill 49 / SL 2023-106 states that from 01/01/24, to include a child in photos/videos/recordings, parents/guardians must Opt-In. This consent allows for yearbook inclusion and school-related social media presence. Non-opted-in students won't feature in new media by the school/district. Find the form in Rooms, under Materials -> "Mandatory" -> "updated model release form".

Good Evening Wahoos,
This week is a short week and the last week before we get out for our Winter break. This Wednesday and Thursday are both early release days. Students will get out at 1pm. Please be at your child's bus stop 2 hours earlier than normal.
For the holiday attire this week, we have on Monday wear blue/white, Tuesday wear your favorite holiday headwear, Wednesday wear your favorite ugly sweater, and Thursday wear your favorite holiday attire.
Last but not least, if you have a rising kindergartener and you are interested in them being in the dual language classroom next year, please go online and complete the necessary forms. Please complete those before the break if possible. Once we come back in January, this will open up to the public and it is first come, first serve basis.
I hope everyone has a great evening!

Good Evening Wahoos. For tomorrow's dress up day, students are able to wear their pajamas. Please make sure students still dress warm because it is cold outside and also ensure that students wear their tennis shoes for safety and for PE. Also, students will be able to indulge in hot cocoa and watch The Polar Express. If you do not want your child to participate or watch The Polar Express, please contact your child's teacher or call the front office first thing tomorrow morning. Thank you and I hope everyone has a wonderful evening!

Good morning,
This message informs you that bus 83 will not run this afternoon. Please make arrangements to pick up your child. A reminder that early check-out ends at 2:30 pm. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, have a great day.

Good morning,
This message informs you that bus 348 (365) currently has no driver for its PM route. Please make arrangements to pick up the child from school. Remember, early check-out ends at 2:30 pm. Thanks for your support, and have a wonderful day.

Good Evening Wahoos,
This week we are continuing with our fun December dress up days. Monday is wear the Grinch or something green, Tuesday is wear red and white like a candy cane, Wednesday is wacky tacky holiday attire, Thursday is Holiday warmth (wear flannel and/or a scarf), and Friday is wear your favorite WARM pajamas and we will watch the Polar Express while indulging in hot chocolate to celebrate and amazing first semester.
This Thursday is our Dual Language students’ performance at 1:00 in the multi-purpose room. If your child has Senora Andrea, Senor Ciro, or Senora Luz we hope to see you this Thursday at 1pm.
Last but most importantly… parents, in light of North Carolina's recent amendment to the Parents' Bill of Rights - Senate Bill 49 we have to update our Model Release forms. Effective January 1, 2024, we are transitioning from an 'OPT-OUT' to an 'OPT-IN' policy for these forms. In the Rooms App, there has been a newly added a classroom labeled with your child's school name and grade level. Within this classroom, navigate to the "Material" section and select it. Here, you'll find a folder titled "Mandatory." Inside this folder, there's an important link named "Updated Model Release Form." This link leads to the latest version of the model release form, which you'll need to complete to opt your child in. This means we will need your explicit consent for your child's participation in activities where their photos may be taken and used in school materials such as yearbooks, Facebook posts, and other educational or promotional content. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
I hope everyone has an amazing weekend!
